DEATH PENALTY DEBATE- AFFIRMATIVE TEAM PERSPECTIVE

This week, our class had a debate on a given topic called :

"Should the death penalty be banned?".

Because our class has a total of 12 students, we divided into 2 groups of 6. My team members are me, Vy, Nhi, Duy Anh, Le Hoang, and Hai. Rounds and rebuttals were carried by duos, which means that there will be three rounds in total and my partner was Vy.

Through days of practicing and selecting information, our team came out with super-duper nice ideas and clear evidence from any big-brain people(experts) we could find.

No

Yes

  • Expensive to keep death row prisoners alive

  • Still available in 94/195 countries

  • Criminals cannot change

  • It is not a valid deterrent

  • It does not stop serious crimes, evidence police chiefs

  • It’s not fair to the prisoners as many are innocent but dead

  • It’s racist against black people

  • Morally wrong and causes mental pain to prisoners

  • Horrible way to kill people

  • Lethal injection= $83,000(for a trial)

Initially, I felt our team's opinion was kind of disadvantage as I only think that why we should preserve the death penalty rather than ban it. Therefore, it took me quite a lot of time watching videos about this topic. Soon enough, I have realized it was a really wide and thought-provoking topic that we could argue on both sides. Out affirmative group was concentrated on 3 main ideas including:

  • The death penalty does not deter crime.

  •  It is not fair to the criminals and the justice system.

  • It is immoral and goes against our norms.

  • In conclusion, as you could see on the table that summarizes all our ideas up there, I think our team could win because we provided over twice as much evidence and notes as the other team, also more detail too.

To give the other team some comments, I would say that they did a pretty good job in presenting their ideas, but the thing they must invest more in was teamwork and information because I see that people were messing up the ideas and a member even didn't know what he was saying and messed up that part a lot.
